Joe Cox

Attorney · Louis D. Brandeis School of Law

Joe Cox started writing articles for Nolo as a freelancer in 2023.

Education. Like Tom Cruise’s character in The Firm, Joe graduated from Western Kentucky University. He earned a B.A. with a dual major in English and political science, and graduated with honors. He later graduated from law school at the University of Louisville. Joe earned multiple awards from each school, including scholarships for his academic achievements.

Legal Career. Joe practiced with a defense-oriented firm for ten years, mostly working with insurance companies to defend their insureds in car wreck cases. From there, he joined another firm where he practiced in everything from collection law to probate law to representing injured plaintiffs in car wreck cases. Joe was counsel or co-counsel of record in three published cases, which is unusual in Kentucky as published cases may be cited for precedential value.

Other Pursuits. Joe has over a decade of experience as a sportswriter and has written or co-written a dozen books about sports. His books have been profiled in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, and he has appeared on MLB Network television to discuss his work. Joe has been active in church and non-profit activities, plays multiple musical instruments, and enjoys reading and spending time with his family.

Why Nolo? Because across his legal and writing experiences, Joe has always been passionate about telling stories that matter to his audience. Coming from a family of teachers, Joe has always believed in education, and loves sharing helpful tips and tactics to help empower people to untangle the knots of the legal system.
