Iowa Child Support

In Iowa, child support is determined based on both parents’ net income as well as the number of children involved. Net income refers to your “take home pay” – or how much money you make after taxes, health insurance, etc. are subtracted. While there are many things that can be deducted from a parent’s income to come up with their net income figure for child support, there are also many factors that cannot be deducted. These include:

Car payments
• Housing costs
• Credit card payments
• Charitable deductions
• Voluntary pension plans
• Savings
• Public assistance payments

Take Advantage of these Services
The Child Support Recovery Unit of the Iowa Department of Human Services handles all matters related to child support, including locating parents, establishing paternity, establishing child support orders, modifying child support orders, enforcing child support orders and more. This unit is dedicated to ensure that children of divorce receive the financial support they are entitled to.

When child support payments are not being made, the Child Support Recovery Unit has a number of methods they can utilize to help enforce the support order. One way in which they help make sure that child support payments are made – on time – by the responsible party, is to withhold the amount from the parent’s check every month. This is called “income withholding.”
